Understanding "work" in phrasal verbs
When you combine "work" with different particles, you get a rich collection of phrasal verbs that all connect to the basic idea of putting effort into something. The verb "work" brings its core meaning of activity and effort to every combination, but the particles shape exactly what kind of effort you're making.
Some of these phrasal verbs focus on solving problems or making progress. You work on a project when you spend time developing it, and you work through difficulties by dealing with them step by step. If you can't solve something directly, you might work around the problem by finding an alternative approach. When you work something out, you're using mental effort to plan something or calculate an answer.
Other combinations show effort directed at getting rid of something unwanted. You work off extra weight through exercise, or work off debt by earning money to pay it back. This connects to work out in the gym, where you put physical effort into improving your fitness.
A few of these phrasal verbs describe gradual processes. You work up courage slowly, building confidence bit by bit. You might also get worked up when emotions build gradually until you feel upset or excited. Meanwhile, situations simply work out when they develop successfully over time, often without your direct control.
